A good packaging brief starts with the product itself. Before choosing a box style, gather the item, any accessories and the insert you plan to use. Measuring the complete pack helps avoid a box that feels too tight or leaves too much movement.
Start with length, width and height
Place the product on a level surface in its intended packing position. Note the longest horizontal dimension as length, the shorter horizontal dimension as width and the vertical dimension as height. Keep the same unit throughout your brief and state whether your measurements refer to the product or the box.
Allow for the complete packing arrangement
A vial, bottle or fragile item may need an insert. A retail set may include a leaflet or several components. Arrange these together before confirming the dimensions. Clearance depends on the structure and material, so ask your packaging team to review the fit rather than adding an arbitrary allowance.
Review a proof before production
Share photographs and a simple packing sketch with your dimensions. Confirm the opening direction, insert layout and artwork placement on the dieline. A digital mockup helps review the appearance; a physical sample can help assess fit when that is important for your project.
